Overview
PE closed-cell foam board is chemically cross-linked and expanded from polyethylene resin, with an independent closed-cell structure. Used as joint backing and filler, it controls sealant depth and absorbs compressive stress from thermal movement and settlement, preventing the sealant from being over-stretched or torn while blocking water and silt.

Advantages
- Closed-cell structure with very low water absorption — stable when buried or immersed long term.
- Wide production line capable of 2–10 cm thickness.
- Good compression recovery (94%), so it resists permanent deformation.
- Chemical- and ageing-resistant, and highly compatible with polysulfide and polyurethane sealants.
- Easy to cut to project sizes; simple installation and controllable cost.
Applications
- Backing under bridge expansion joints
- Dam and spillway movement joints
- Tunnel lining joints
- Metro and utility tunnel joint backing
- Reservoir joint lining
- Retaining walls and runway joints
Installation
- Clean the joint of loose material and debris.
- Cut to the joint width and depth; mitre corners at 45° and butt-joint — never overlap.
- Fix to the joint face on the first-cast side with steel pins or adhesive. Do not bond the full face.
- Butt joints must be tight so concrete grout cannot migrate behind the board.
- Leave about 3 cm at the top as a sealant groove, then cast the second side.
FAQ
L600 is the high-pressure grade: about 55 Shore A, density about 120–130 kg/m³, black, hard and strong in compression — used in dams and high-pressure hydraulic joints. L1100 is the medium-pressure grade: about 35 Shore A, density about 90 kg/m³, grey, softer with good recovery — used for general joint filling in roads, basins and canals. In short: high load and high pressure → L600; general filling → L1100.
It absorbs almost nothing. Each cell is individually closed, so water cannot penetrate, which is why it stays stable when buried or immersed — the key advantage over bitumen-impregnated wood fibre board. It is however sensitive to UV, so store it out of direct sunlight. Cut or damaged faces expose open cells that can absorb water, so avoid scoring by aggregate or sharp objects.
Five steps: clean the joint; cut to width and depth with 45° corners; fix to the joint face with steel pins or adhesive (not full-face bonding); butt joints tightly; leave about 3 cm at the top for sealant. The key point is that foam board is a backer: it supports and cushions inside the joint while the sealant closes it — both are needed for a complete seal.
The board is placed at the bottom of the joint to control bead depth (typically 1/2–2/3 of the joint width), then sealant is applied on top. The board provides backing support and prevents three-sided adhesion from tearing the bead; the sealant provides the final water seal.
