Overview
Formed water-swelling waterstop strip is made from rubber and superabsorbent resin; it expands on contact with water to compact the joint and seal it by expansion pressure. It is elastic and pressure-resistant, installed in a pre-formed groove, and used for demanding construction joints.

Installation
- Nail a timber batten to the first-cast formwork to leave a groove, then embed the strip after stripping the form.
- Alternatively bond the full length with 401 adhesive, or fix with steel pins at 800–1,000 mm centres on horizontal joints and 600–800 mm on vertical joints. Never pierce the strip.
- Butt splices by pressing flat; overlap at least 50 mm and press tight with no gaps.
- Cast as soon as possible after installation so the strip is fully encased (cover >5 cm).
- Keep the strip dry before casting — premature swelling ruins it. Protect finished stock from water.
FAQ
Putty type is black, soft and self-adhesive — peel and stick, lower cost, used above the water table in secondary locations with low water pressure. Formed type is elastic, resists water pressure and needs a shallow groove for fixing, so it is used in more demanding construction joints. For ordinary basement raft and wall construction joints, putty 20×30 mm is the usual choice.
Three fixing methods: (1) preformed groove — nail a batten to the formwork, strip it and embed the strip; (2) full-length bonding with 401 adhesive; (3) steel pins at 800–1,000 mm on horizontal joints and 600–800 mm on vertical faces, never piercing the body. Butt splices are pressed flat with at least 50 mm overlap.
No. Swelling is essentially one-way: once expanded it can no longer be compressed into the joint, so the affected length must be removed and replaced. Store delivered stock under cover, protected from rain and damp.
Not in locations permanently immersed in flowing water (upstream dam faces, basin walls) — continuous immersion leaches the swelling agent and degrades performance. In high-pressure (>0.3 MPa) or strongly vibrating movement joints the strip is only an auxiliary measure and a waterstop must be the primary barrier.
