Overview

Surface-mounted rubber waterstop is fixed to the water-facing surface of concrete and works together with external waterproofing as a secondary sealing line. It suits locations where a buried waterstop cannot be installed, rehabilitation of existing structures, and supplementary waterproofing in tunnels, metros and utility tunnels.

Installation

Clean the water-facing substrate so it is flat, free of loose material and free of standing water.
Cut to joint width and bond on the joint centreline; fix the edges with dedicated clamps or powder-actuated pins.
Splice by hot vulcanisation; simple adhesive butt joints are not acceptable.
Overlap tightly with the waterproofing membrane to form a continuous sealing line.
Check for lifted edges and voids before backfilling or casting.

FAQ

Is "surface-mounted" the same as "external" waterstop?

Yes. The trade also calls it an external waterstop. This site uses "surface-mounted" consistently to mean a waterstop bonded to the outer, water-facing face of the structure.

Can a surface-mounted waterstop replace a buried one?

Not entirely. The surface-mounted type is bonded to the outside of the structure and serves as an additional sealing line and repair measure; the buried type is cast into the concrete and is the primary barrier. Important works generally use both.
